News from the Optimism Factory:
”It’s not all bad but mostly it is.”
-Pat Coakley-
So, given that forecast, I have new terms.
No matter what online account I have, I receive email notices regularly that “We have updated our terms.” They didn’t ask. They told me.
Well, I’m updating my terms. There will be no “I’m hoping for a pony” anymore.
As of Nov 4, I turned off all ( and I mean all) notifications.
I now can go days if I want to and believe me I want to) with my head stuck beneath terra firma. Like Roz Chaz’s great cartoon in The New Yorker, my bandwidth for news has averaged out to be steadily between level 3 and 2.
The first level I’m leaving to others until I’m planted.
Words fail me when the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade has clown buffoons balloons for cabinet nominees for next administration.- Pat Coakley-
What am I doing instead of reading, listening and following up notifications of the outside world?
In the dark times
will there also be singing?
Yes, there will also be singing.
About the dark times.
-Bertolt Brecht-
This Brecht quote was from a book I just started reading by Paul Lynch, “Prophet Song”. But, with all due respect:
Dear Mr. Brecht, some of us are gonna try not to sing about these dark times.
PS. Mother Courage is not my middle name.

So, I’m just going to take all the drawing and painting classes I paid for and have yet to start and read books, really good books, ordering new books about cartooning, get more art supplies, and listen to some audio books that have a nice narrator voice.
Also, I’ll share folks who simply make me laugh or I would simply love to have just a smidgen of their drawing talent and temperament. Some of them are on Substack and some are not.
And I’m going to admire my ol’ beans portfolio. Not all peeps have one. My Mark Rothko Bean photo portfolio is one of a kind. AKA I Love Legumes.

Beans have soul.

Here’s an Instagram feed you might enjoy. Look at his caricatures of authors. Seriously, some are simply hit over the head with talent.
Here’s someone to read if you can still laugh.

It takes you to his substack page titled, ‘everyone is entitled to my own opinion” which genius titling. You can subscribe free or paid.
Here is his post that made me know I could still laugh.
One of the quotes is:
"go take a seat, you grandstanding, performative-nonsense douche-canoe.”
OMG, I’m almost 80 and laughed out loud at douche-canoe.
And, one more talent whose words and images always delight me.

So, let me end on two images from almost a year ago: January, 2024. I’m crossing out 2024 and updating to 2025.
I love it when your posts pop up Pat! Thanks so much for mentioning my substack too x
